Reflections on Oral Presentation

I would like to start my reflections on the Oral presentation by thanking my group-mates Danhua and Luigi. They have been such wonderful team-mates and it was a real pleasure to have worked with them. It is amazing how people of three different nationalities can work so well together. I learnt so much from working together with them. I would love to have another opportunity to work with them again.

The dedication the group showed was simply amazing. After our interview with Professor Tan Eng Chye, we worked through the night to transcribe the interview, churn out the power-point slides and to prepare the points for our presentation. I must really take my hat off to Luigi who can simply come up with power-point slides that looked so impressive in such a short amount of time. Although it was out of our hands that the interview was the day before our presentation, my group-mates did not even complain. They simply got down to work. For me, that showed a lot of character.

Individual Performance

For my peer teaching presentation, I received comments that I spoke too fast and that resulted in me being unclear at times. I believe that for this presentation I managed to control my pace well and tried to pronounce my words as clearly as I could. However, I still tripped on some words and I feel I should work on this aspect more.

Ms Goh also commented that for my peer teaching, I was a little tensed and did not look natural. In this aspect, I feel that I will need a lot more presentation opportunities before I can be as natural as some of our course-mates clearly were. However I felt that I was still able to deliver my points clearly to my “target audience”. Ms Goh also mentioned that I should smile when presenting. I could not remember if I did smile or not, but I guess I will find out when I watch the video on Thursday. Overall I felt that I did alright, though there were definitely areas which I could improve on. I hope to learn from your comments as my own assessment of my performance may not be accurate.

  1. Dear Zhengyang,

I would like to start off by saying, you are one of the few guys that did not look anxious or nervous at all during the presentation. Even if you were on the inside, I think you hid it well enough.

During the OP, you might be slightly fast sometimes, but overall it was good. You vary your tone to emphasize on different points.

For your gestures, you did quite well too. Leaning forward slightly for emphasis and doing hand wavings at the right time.

However, I do not remember seeing you smile. I also think you could have slowed down or did pauses to let the audience stop and think through before continuing. Little pauses can help the audience to digest and understand your presentation better.

    Pak Ming

  2. Hi Zhengyang,

Kudos to you and your team for that great presentation last Thursday! Your team began and ended off the presentation on a positive note which i thought was a great move considering the formality of presentation settings. And i sense a strong teamwork especially during the Q&A session where all three of you supported each other.

As for individual comments, i thought that your variety of tone and emphasis was lacking but overall, it was good. I can understand you throughout the presentation. And yes, i have to agree on the point of smiling more often. You look too serious (to the extent of being a little scary), so try to loosen up abit!

  3. Hey Zhengyang,

Your group did a great job in the oral presentation last Thursday! All of you showed good teamwork and coordination which is really commendable.

Overall, I felt that your individual performance was good. Although slightly fast at times, but you were fluent in your presentation and you managed to get your message across to me. However I felt that you were pacing around slightly too much, which made you appear nervous.

And I totally understand the part about smiling because I got the same comment from Miss Goh. With so many other things to focus on in addition to the nervousness, it can be difficult to put a smile across (at least for me). I guess with more practice, you'll gain more confidence and naturally smile more :)

  4. Dear Zhengyang,

After hearing your group’s presentation, it was indeed an interesting proposal that would impress the professors present. The portion that you presented was clear and sufficiently elaborated. The pace of speech was appropriate too.

However there are just some minor pointers you might want to look out for in your further presentation. Other than the issue of smile mentioned by the rest above, your physical posture was kind of stiff. This could convey some sense of nervousness but I guess it will happen to all of us subconsciously during presentation. Maybe you could consider this minor point in the future. Next, your introduction was well elaborated; yet at times because of the length of the background information you provided, I was a bit lost. Therefore maybe you could consider realign your audiences’ attention back to the main issue you are presenting whenever possible so that it could be smoother and more relevant. Lastly you could consider using the laser pointer that you are holding on to better highlight the specific points you are talking about during your presentations, to better zoom in on which that particular aspect you are presenting.

Generally, you group presentation was well planned and executed. You came off as a well-mannered and amiable speaker. Therefore hope the above minor suggestions could help you further in your presentation skills in the future.

  5. Hi Zheng Yang,

On the whole, I think your group did well for the presentation. Your team has demonstrated good rapport, especially during the Q&A session where all of you tried to back up each other's responses to the questions posed. I remember at a certain point, Dan Hua was lost for words and you were quick to help her out from there. As an individual, you have presented yourself as a good team player.

From your presentation, you have also shown to be confident and clear of the content knowledge. Perhaps, you could work on your smiles because this may pull the distance between you and your audience closer, considering that the audience are the ultimate decision makers and impression does count. Other than that, I think you did fine :)

    Cheers,
    Xin Wei

  6. Dear Zhengyang,

Your group had done a great job for the presentation! I can definitely see that all of you are familiar with the content and the excellent rapport between you and your team mates during the Q & A session was also evident.

As for your individual performance, your voice volume was appropriate and there was good use of emphasis and language. It was great that you did not appear nervous, but you may consider adopting a more casual and relaxed approach while presenting as you seemed slightly too serious. I also agree with Pak Ming that you need to learn to control your speed during presentations as you were speaking a little too quickly. Nonetheless, this was a good presentation so keep up good work!

  7. Hi all,
Thank you all for your valuable comments. Thank you for highlighting the points that I can take note of in the future to improve my presentation skills. I really appreciate the feedback you all gave.

Pak Ming: Thank you for your comments. On hindsight I realise that I tend to speak faster when I am nervous. Therefore I believe I will definitely need more practice to get use to the nervousness. I will remember to try and slow down and punctuate my speech with pauses. I will remember to smile more and loosen up a little more in the future. Once again thank you for commenting.

Ariff: Thank you for your comments. I am glad that you liked our presentation. I will try to vary my tone a little more in the future. I will definitely bear in mind to smile more when presenting in the future. Lastly, I can assure you that I am not at all scary when I am not presenting.:) Once again thank you for your feedback.

Glenda: Thank you for your comments. I am glad that you liked out presentation. I did not realise that I was pacing around. Thank you for pointing that out. I think I really need to smile more as everyone seems to think that way. I am not like that in real-life. :(
I guess you and I have to work on smiling more. :) Once again thank you for your valuable comments.

Wei Xiong: Thank you for your comments. I did not realise that I appeared stiff. Maybe I will get to see it in the video. I do not quite understand you point on realigning to audience back to the main issue. Do you mean that I should reiterate my group’s stand whenever possible?
I did realise that I did not use the laser pointer. I guess it would have been better for the audience to follow my presentation if I had highlighted the important points with the pointer. Once again thank you for your compliments and I appreciate your comments greatly.

Xin Wei: Thank you for your comments. I was glad that you felt that our presentation was clear and understandable. I am now very aware of the fact that I did not smile during the presentation and appeared to be too serious. :( I will bear it in mind to smile when I am presenting in the future. :) Once again thank you for commenting.

Hui Yi: Thank you for your comments. I am glad you enjoyed our presentation. I will take note to be more casual and relaxed in my future presentations, however I believe it will take some time before I achieve this. I will make more effort to control my delivery pace in the future and speak slower. Once again thank you for your comments.
